As for water based finishes: There are very good ones but for what ever reason they seem to only be sold thru the professional channels. For lighter woods substitute tung oil for linseed oil. Mix a small batch of 2# cut and shake well before using. One thing I have found is that the best results are obtained by using shellac made from flakes.
