WebThe synthesis of a portion of the challenging β1,2-mannosyl polymer found in the cell walls of Candida albicans was undertaken to develop a conjugate vaccine against C. albicans and to facilitate NMR conformational studies of this unique polysaccharide. Phosphomannan oligosaccharides featuring a terminal α(1 → 2)-linked reducing sugar can be identified by a characteristic fragmentation in the MS source. Loss of 120 mass units by retro-aldol scission between C-2 and C-3 of the reducing sugar was observed for the penta- tetra- and trisaccharide fractions upon ESI-MS analysis.
